Students Gearing Up for Public Speaking Contest

On February 1st the JCC will be packed and the corridors will be buzzing with excitement and nervous energy as students prepare to take centre stage at the 29th Annual Public Speaking Contest. It takes a lot of preparation and a lot of courage to stand up and deliver a three minute speech in front of peers, judges, teachers and family members, but that’s exactly what more than 100 kids in grades four through seven do each year.

Students have already begun the substantial preparation that is required, including research, organizing their thoughts and opinions, revising draft after draft, and, of course, practicing in front of an audience. The resulting speech may be three minutes, but the preparation takes hours. Even among adults, public speaking consistently ranks as one of the most feared activities, so it is especially impressive that so many youngsters take on this challenge year after year. Many participate every year that they are eligible. Students who are interested in a unique challenge will present their speeches in Hebrew.

Here are just a few of the topics from which students are choosing, or they may select their own. The full list is available at jewishvancouver.com/psc2017.

  1. A Jewish value or mitzvah which is very meaningful to me is ….
  2. You are creating a new Jewish community from scratch. What are the first two Jewish institutions you would establish and why?
  3. What is a mensch? Write about someone you know who is a mensch.
