Community Challah Bake

There’s nothing like the smell of freshly baked challah, nor anything more satisfying than making bread with your own hands. Here’s your chance, and you don’t even have to get your kitchen messy.

Join hundreds of people from across our community tomorrow, November 10th, at one of two community challah bakes: Beth Israel in Vancouver or the Bayit in Richmond. These organizations have each stepped up to host an event in their community, and volunteers from more than 15 other communal organizations have been involved in the planning of these events.

The challah bakes bring together a diverse group of people of all backgrounds and traditions to participate in communal challah baking. Participants gather at tables supplied with all of the necessary ingredients and recipe cards, then together they mix the ingredients and braid the challah. It is an experience that binds participants together as they learn about the centrality of challah throughout Jewish history. The community challah bake was first launched three years ago as part of the Shabbat Project, an initiative that started in South Africa and then went viral.

Jewish Federation is assisting the event organizers by providing community engagement grants to help defray some of the expenses. Our involvement is part of our growing emphasis on community engagement and support for our regional communities.

There is still time to participate, so come bake some challah! Here’s who to contact for more information:
