Schara Tzedeck is the largest and most established Orthodox synagogue in Western Canada and has been a cornerstone of the Vancouver Jewish Community for over 116 years. We have a membership base of over 500 families, beautiful and modernized facilities including banquet halls, kitchens and a mikvah, and supportive and engaged staff.

The Opportunity - We are seeking a Director Youth and Young Families who will work together with our rabbinic leadership and staff to engage our membership and foster a greater connection for youth and families to the Jewish community and Torah observance.

The Director of Youth and Young Families is a dynamic individual who will be responsible for the overall management and development of youth programming for the synagogue for children up to 12 years old, with a focus on ages 9 to 12.

Goals:
• Develop and lead a successful program comprised of diverse activities for various age groups and levels of observance
• Foster a greater connection for youth and families to the Jewish community and Torah observance
• Act as role model for Jewish values and the promotion of Jewish identity.

Responsibilities:

Event Planning and Delivery
• Develop the annual schedule of events for youth including regular Shabbat morning programming as well as for Yom Tov and Chaggim, segment programming based on age cohorts as appropriate to ensure success
• With guidance from the synagogue’s rabbis and staff; plan, implement, market, and deliver youth activities
• Oversee logistics for all youth activities including the purchase of supplies and the hiring of staff for supervision
• During events such as Shabbat Scholar Dinners or other events plan fun, interactive, and educational programs for youth while the adult activities are taking place
• Organize an annual family explanatory Shabbat service
• Participate in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah programs as required in coordination with the synagogue’s rabbis
• Manage programs and events as per the annual budget
• Conduct evaluations of all programs and events

Communications
• Build and maintain relationships with youth and their families
• Promote events and activities through a range of media including in-person conversations and phone calls, email, social media, text messages, website and electronic flyers
• Work with the NCSY Rabbi to ensure youth are staying connected to the synagogue post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah by moving on to NCSY
• Work closely with the Youth Committee

What you bring to the position:
• Post-secondary education
• Experience working in Jewish education
• Experience creating programs for children of all ages
• A track record of success with engaging 6 to 12-year-olds in Jewish learning
• Innovative approach to developing programs
• Charismatic, welcoming demeanor
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities
• Knowledgeable in Modern Orthodox practices and halacha
