Position Overview

B’Yachad is Or Shalom’s B’nei Mitzvah program. An independent, experiential Jewish after-school program that prepares children in grades 6 - 7 for their B’nei Mitzvah ceremonies.

We are looking for a talented and engaging B’Yachad educator for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, to work with B’Yachad students in a group setting in-person, once a week.

The educator will work with the students in a unique preparatory environment, teaching Jewish values and customs, grappling with big questions, as well as teaching Hebrew/Torah skills. All while boosting students’ self-confidence and positive associations with Jewish tradition and Jewish adult role models in preparation for their big day.

The right candidate will be a creative and resourceful self-starter and able to both independently lead a class of learners with varying degrees of knowledge, as well as collaboratively teach with other instructors when the B’yachad class comes together for communal learning with the younger students at the start and end of each session.

Candidates should possess an innate love of learning and knowledge of Jewish tradition, text, culture, and heritage.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience teaching or working with children in grades 6 and 7 in a group setting.
- Ability to teach Hebrew, Torah trope, and prayer skills.
- Be engaging, enthusiastic, and passionate about Jewish education
- Experience working in diverse educational settings
- Knowledge of Judaism and ability to deliver hands-on learning programs.
- Interest in further deepening your knowledge of Jewish traditions and teaching methodologies.
- Feel comfortable in a flexible, professional environment
-Have an open-minded approach to Judaism and a variety of perspectives.
- A team player, open to creative and collaborative work, able to work well with other teachers, and to communicate with parents.
- Ability to be supervised.

Responsibilities
- Prepare classroom and/ or materials (if needed) and welcome your students before class begins;
- Support students in forming their own Jewish identities.
- Work with students to explore aspects of Judaism.
- Work with the Rabbi to track student progress and needs.
- Develop individualized approaches to support each child’s learning.
- As directed, plan lessons on specific subjects the Rabbi defines (for example, 45 minutes of Hebrew/trope learning covering one blessing or one vowel form, followed by 45 minutes of teaching about a designated theme or subject).
- Write a summary of what was taught in the lesson each week and provide it to the Rabbi.
- Communicate with parents directly about each student’s progress and needs (checking in when students are dropped off/picked up).
- After class, put away all materials, make sure the classroom is tidy, and wipe down surfaces.

Optional additional hours
- Attend Or Shalom holiday and Shabbat events.
- Assist with other Or Shalom events and service projects involving youth.

This is a part-time, seasonal position from September 2024 to June 2025. Or Shalom is often closed for major Jewish holidays, and classes may not operate when the public or private schools are not in session, as well as during statutory holidays.

The hourly wage is $30/hour. B’Yachad meets once a week. Approximately 1 hour of lesson prep work may be required each week before class.
