To honour our Black Jewish community members, we want to celebrate Black History Month together.

 

We are inviting you to the premiere broadcast for I am Jewish: Honouring Black Jewish Experiences on Wednesday, February 24th. The program will feature experiences & performances here in Canada, and in connection to Israel.

 

Confirmed Speakers & Performers

 

  • June Girvan, Founder of J'nikira Dinqinesh Education Centre - Every Child is Sacred, and acting president of Black History Ottawa.
  • Yaffa Tegegne B.C.L/LL.B, a lawyer and human rights advocate with an innate passion for public service. Social justice is in her blood, quite literally; Yaffa is the daughter of Baruch Tegegne, z”l, the Ethiopian Jewish community leader and activist credited with initiating the Aaliyah of Ethiopian Jewry to Israel.
  • Tema Smith, Director of Professional Development at 18Doors (formerly InterfaithFamily), and a contributing columnist at The Forward; building a meaningful and inclusive Jewish community through research, training, writing and relational engagement work.
  • Nissim Black, an African American Hasidic Jew who brings sharp beats and hook-filled rhymes to the masses.
  • Kendell Pinkney, a Brooklyn -based theatre-maker, Jewish life consultant, and rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. When not doing rabbinic things, he can be found working on his next stage play, or, more often than not, watching Bravo television series marathons.
