http://www.peretz-centre.org. Feature work: Benyomin III: The Search for the Lost Tribes. 'Amol’z geven a shtetele—Once upon a time, there was a little village' So begins the tale of the wanderings of Benyomin and his friend Senderl, whom one might call a Yiddish Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Living in a poor little town in tsarist Russia, Benjamin dreams of the land beyond the mythical Sambatyon River, where, according to legend, reside the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel—red-headed Jews who have no tsar, no masters, and live a life of ease. The cantata, in Yiddish, is based on a story by one of the founders of Yiddish and Hebrew literature, S.Y. Abramovitch, better known as Mendele Moykher Sforim, Mendele the Bookseller. It was arranged for choir by Max Helfman. Choir conductor: David Millard. Accompanist: Elliott Dainow. Narrated by David Skulski. Special guest artist Stephen Aberle, accompanied by Elliott Dainow, performing the program, Jews Sing the Blues: Felicitous Lamentations from King David through Randy Newman
