Several months ago, when we first discussed FEDtalks with Irwin Cotler, we identified the fallout from failed states – particularly issues of migration – as a key focus of his address at our Annual Campaign Opening event. Little did we know that the issue would come to a head in the weeks immediately leading up to FEDtalks on September 17, 2015.

We know this is an issue that our community cares about deeply, and at FEDtalks we will explore the refugee and migrant crisis. First, Irwin Cotler will help us understand the various factors at play in terms of causes, consequences, and what the future holds. Another FEDtalks speaker, Rabbi David Wolpe – named by Newsweek Magazine as the most influential rabbi in America – will bring the Jewish perspective on responding to humanitarian crises. You can read Rabbi Wolpe’s Time.com article on the refugee and migrant crisis here.

These speakers will be joined by two others who are also delivering FEDtalks that evening, Dafna Lifshitz and Eli Winkelman.

Dafna Lifshitz is CEO of Appleseeds Academy, which is bridging the tech divide that exists amongst young people in remote parts of Israel – including our partnership region in the Upper Galilee. With support from our Federation Annual Campaign, the Appleseeds program Net@ is changing the trajectory of young people’s lives, and is breaking the cycle of poverty one teen and one family at a time. Read more about Dafna here.

Eli Winkelman is an extraordinary young woman who baked a loaf of challah in college and transformed it – and thousands of loaves like it - into powerful acts of social justice. The organization she founded, Challah For Hunger, now has 70 chapters in four countries. Baking a loaf of bread may seem like the humblest of acts, but with Eli it is an example of how anyone, anywhere, at any age can change the world.
