Welcoming Israel's New Ambassador to Canada

Ambassador Miriam Ziv

On Tuesday, March 3rd Vancouver welcomed Miriam Ziv, Israel's Ambassador to Canada, as she visited for the first time since being appointed in September 2008. She is the first female ambassador of Israel to Canada, just one of many “firsts” she has experienced in her career. Upon entering Israel’s foreign ministry in 1972, she was considered to be the “pioneer” woman cadet.

Ambassador Ziv is now a veteran diplomat, and is widely recognized as an expert on Iran. Addressing over 200 community members gathered at Temple Sholom, she shared her insights and knowledge, and spoke about the threat posed to Israel by Iran’s development of nuclear resources. Making it clear that any action by Iran would have impact far beyond Israel, and be felt throughout the Middle East and Europe, she noted that Egypt and Saudi Arabia, amongst others, have also expressed concern over the situation. She stressed the ongoing importance of continuing to cultivate relationships with other countries in the region, especially as Iran’s nuclear program evolves.

In addition to the issue of the threat posed by Iran, Ambassador Ziv’s set the expansion of Israel’s presence on university campuses across the country as a priority.  Prior to the speaking engagement, she attended an event at UBC hosted by Hillel. This was an important morale booster for Jewish students given the current campus climate. Read more about the visit here.

Overall, this visit was part of Ambassador Ziv’s strategy of outreach to the provinces and to Jewish communities across Canada. In addition to the event in Vancouver, she spoke at public events in Edmonton and Victoria, and met with Premier Gordon Campbell. She also met with editorial boards of local media outlets, with the hope of helping them frame Israel accurately within a world context.
