Jewish Communities Help Fort McMurray

Jewish communities across Canada have raised $320,000 to help victims of the devastating wildfires that have affected Fort McMurray and the surrounding communities. Donations from our community totaled $16,500, including a $10,000 designation from our Emergency Reserve Fund approved by our board.

Our community and our Jewish Federation have a history of responding quickly and generously whenever and wherever disaster strikes. This time, the impact was felt particularly close to home. We stand in solidarity with the victims of this unprecedented natural disaster in Canada.

Fort McMurray and its surrounding communities were ravaged by raging wildfires that damaged and destroyed thousands of homes and properties. Over 88,000 people were displaced, and while some have just received permission to re-enter the city, it will continue to be some time before normalcy is restored. Many families are just now able to understand the extent of their losses, and many homes remain uninhabitable.

Edmonton, 500 kilometers south of Fort McMurray, received the majority of the evacuees. This placed a heavy toll on local agencies, food banks and shelters.

100% of funds donated through the Alberta Fire Relief Fund will be directed to those in need through our partners at the Jewish Federation of Edmonton. Funds will be distributed to local organizations and services that are providing direct aid to those in need, like the Edmonton Food Bank and Edmonton Emergency Relief services.
